While Austin’s “Black Flight” is well-documented, there are still groups of young people who move here for school, work, or creative opportunities.
In our newest episode of Austin While Black, we chat with Kel Brown, an artist who found a more supportive & accessible indie art community here compared to his hometown of Houston.
ICYMI, the latest episode of @austinwhileblack is up!

Austin’s very clearly lacking in diversity, but how often do we get to hear the perspectives of longtime residents who grew up in the city during Jim Crow? What has (or hasn’t) changed as Austin’s population has grown and changed over the years? To find out, we talked to Austin City Council Member Ora Houston.
This episode was lowkey (OK, highkey) challenging for me to edit, so I hope you enjoy it!

One of us is Nigerian. Another one is Kenyan. :3
We’re answering the question of “where are all the Black people in Austin” by showing Austinites and visitors some of the amazing Black events that happen in this city. Last month, we went to the Capital City Black Film Festival, and just a few weekends ago, we attended RAS Day. Enjoy the recap of that incredibly hype (and giving) celebration!
We’re back! And with some event coverage!
(Basically, this is what we’ve been up to, so don’t be mad at us for not posting more on here.)
We’re Doyin and Evelyn, the duo behind Austin While Black. Since we’ve launched, we’ve learned so much more about the city through the lens of Black community members - and we’ve only scratched the surface. We need your help to continue!
Here at Austin While Black, there is no crew. In our free time, we both operate as director, producer, camerawoman, editor, interviewer, researcher…and we’re discovering more and more roles as we go along!
Your donation would alleviate AWB’s production costs, most notably gas and equipment rentals/purchases. We’ve set up a PayPal account to make the process simple and secure. If you have other resources you’d like to provide, you can always email us at austinwhileblack@gmail.com.
Thank you so much for the encouragement, feedback, and support you’ve given us!
Help us continue making AWB episodes!
Here’s a quick recap of our first screening at Monkeywrench Books last month. We want to thank Monkeywrench and everyone who came to the screening for supporting us and turning the web series into a living community. THANK YOU.
Months ago, Rocío from MonkeyWrench Books reached out to us to invite us to screen the current episodes of austinwhileblack at the bookstore. Finally last month, everything came together and we got to meet some of our amazing AWB fam. THANK YOU for supporting us. And if we didn’t get to see you at this screening, we hope to see you at the next one, and the next, and the next…

Here’s the full piece that I drew for Ladies of Literature vol. 2, also previewed in this interview with Arielle Jovellanos and Janet Sung, the project organizers. The interview also has previews of other full illustrations, so go check it out!

Yesterday evening we screened the current episodes of #AustinWhileBlack at MonkeyWrench Books! Thanks so much to MonkeyWrench for making this possible, to our episode interviewees for letting us film them, and to our #ATX fam for coming out and sharing their experiences. Here’s to more screenings to come!
